UN chief: clean energy and climate justice are vital

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday called on countries party to the Paris Agreement to prepare faster and deeper emission reduction plans for 2035.

He urged nations to announce their new targets ahead of the COP30 climate negotiations.

Guterres noted that, since the adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015, projected global temperature rise has fallen from four degrees Celsius to 2.6, provided current national climate plans are fully implemented.

He also emphasised the importance of accelerating the clean energy transition, reducing methane emissions, protecting forests, deploying technology in heavy industry, and ensuring climate justice.

The European Union has yet to reach agreement on its new targets, while China aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060, which would require a roughly 30% reduction in emissions by 2035.
