The typhoon “Ragasa,” considered the strongest tropical cyclone of the year, struck the southern Chinese city of Yangjiang on Wednesday, 24 September.

The storm had already claimed 17 lives in Taiwan and brought severe winds and heavy rain to Hong Kong.

The typhoon is currently moving towards Maoming in Guangdong Province, a key city for oil refining. Satellite imagery precisely captures the moment it reached the province.

Benjamin Horton, Dean of the School of Energy and Environment at City University of Hong Kong, emphasised that climate change is increasing the likelihood of stronger typhoons in southern China. According to him, following record-breaking rainfall, the region’s meteorological conditions are now particularly vulnerable.
