Vietnam’s first subway service began operating on Sunday in Ho Chi Minh City, marking a major milestone in the country’s urban development. The 19.7-kilometer line, built with yen loans under Japan's official development assistance program, connects the city center (Ben Thanh) with Suoi Tien in the northeast, reducing travel time to around 30 minutes.
The subway line, which includes an underground section of 2.5 kilometers, aims to alleviate traffic congestion and combat air pollution. The project, costing ¥212 billion, was delayed several times due to administrative issues and the COVID-19 pandemic, with the original opening date set for 2015.
A local woman, traveling with her child, expressed excitement about her first urban railway experience. Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Naoki Ito attended the opening, hoping the subway will serve as a model for future urban development in Vietnam.
