French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday condemned Washington’s decision to deny visas to Palestinian officials for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York, calling it “unacceptable” and urging the United States to reverse the move.
“We demand that this measure be overturned and that Palestinian representation be guaranteed in line with the Host Country Agreement,” Macron wrote on X.
The United States announced last week it would not permit Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and other officials to attend the session, even as several U.S. allies prepare to formally recognise Palestine as a state.
Macron issued his remarks following a call with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, with whom he will co-chair the Conference on the Two-State Solution in New York on 22 September.
“Our aim is straightforward: to build the widest possible international backing for the Two-State Solution, the only path to addressing the legitimate aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians,” he said, stressing that “no aggression, annexation effort, or forced displacement will derail the momentum we have built together with the Crown Prince, a momentum already supported by many partners.”
