Ukrainian President Zelenskyy stated that European security guarantees and a frozen conflict will not suffice, emphasizing Ukraine's aspiration to join NATO and secure clear, future guarantees.
The president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday, December 19, that European security guarantees and a frozen conflict would not suffice for Ukraine, which remains committed to joining NATO.
Speaking at a press conference, Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine "cannot live with a frozen conflict" and emphasized the need for concrete guarantees in the near future. He also underlined the importance of involving the United States in discussions about potential foreign peacekeeping contingents.
Zelenskyy added that Ukraine might consider the continued transit of Russian gas under the condition that Moscow does not receive payment for it until after the war, though Kyiv had previously ruled out extending its gas transit contract with Russia.
Addressing claims from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who suggested that a preliminary agreement reached in Istanbul during early 2022 could form the basis for future talks, Zelenskyy refuted the notion, asserting that no such Istanbul agreements ever existed.
