Argentine President Javier Milei was attacked by protesters while campaigning near Buenos Aires on Wednesday, as his convoy was pelted with stones, bottles, and plants. Milei and his security team were unharmed.
The incident occurred in the Lomas de Zamora district, about 20 kilometres south of Buenos Aires, where Milei was greeting supporters from the back of a moving pickup truck. His sister and chief of staff, Karina Milei, and other officials were also in the vehicle. The convoy left the scene quickly after the attack.
A female supporter suffered rib injuries during clashes between supporters and opponents of the president and was taken to hospital by ambulance.
The protests come amid a corruption scandal involving the public disability agency and Karina Milei. Audio recordings released by Diego Spagnuolo, the agency’s former head, allegedly implicated Karina Milei in misappropriating funds meant for people with disabilities. Milei denied the allegations, calling the claims “lies” and promising legal action against Spagnuolo.
Local authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the alleged kickback scheme. Properties linked to the case were raided on Friday, and Spagnuolo was dismissed from his post last week “as a preventive measure,” according to the government.
