The Lithuanian parliament on Tuesday approved a new prime minister, marking a key step in the formation of the country’s ruling coalition.
Social Democrat Party (LSDP) candidate Inga Ruginiene was confirmed by parliament as prime minister. She will formally assume office once President Gitanas Nauseda issues a decree and she is sworn in.
The new coalition government comprises the LSDP, the Nemunas Dawn party, and the Lithuanian Farmers, Greens and Christian Families Union, holding 82 of the 141 seats in parliament. The Social Democrats remain the largest faction with 52 members.
The coalition’s agenda prioritises protecting the population from external threats, ensuring adequate defence funding, supporting domestic business, and improving conditions for families. It also plans to increase excise duties on tobacco, alcohol, and electronic cigarettes.
In addition, the government has pledged to implement measures to combat xenophobia and to provide strong support to Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression and its path towards integration into the European Union and NATO.
