South Korea is seeking to restore its relationship with China, which has been tense in recent years, according to the leader of a high-level delegation from Seoul during a visit to Beijing on Sunday, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.

The delegation was sent by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who is currently in Washington to meet U.S. President Donald Trump. Former assembly speaker Park Byeong-seug, head of the delegation, met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and delivered a letter from Lee to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Diplomatic ties between the two countries had improved following a 2017 dispute over South Korea’s deployment of a U.S. missile defense system, which China opposed. However, tensions resurfaced in 2023 after critical remarks on Beijing by South Korea's former president, Yoon Suk Yeol.

Park expressed hope to Wang Yi that the visit would help "open the door to normalizing South Korea-China relations, which have been strained in recent years," Yonhap reported.
