Eemeli Peltonen, a member of the Social Democratic Party, died in the country’s Parliament House in Helsinki on Tuesday.
Parliament’s communications office confirmed his death, though authorities have not released details, while local media reported it as a suicide.
Parliament’s security chief Aaro Toivonen told Finnish daily Iltalehti that emergency services, rescue units and police were alerted after the incident. He said, "A death took place in the morning."
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, speaking at his party’s summer meeting in Kajaani, described the news as "truly shocking," adding that "one of our colleagues has died on the parliamentary premises. This is very sad news."
In a statement, parliament’s work community said it shared in the grief of Peltonen’s family.
Peltonen, 33, was serving his first term in parliament. In June, he wrote on Facebook that he was struggling with health problems, including a kidney condition, which had kept him away from parliamentary duties during the spring and summer.
