More than 40 people are missing after a boat capsized in northwest Nigeria’s Sokoto State on Sunday, with 10 survivors rescued so far, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The boat was en route to the popular Goronyo market when disaster struck.

NEMA officials, collaborating with local authorities, have launched a search and rescue operation to locate those still missing. Zubaidar Umar, head of NEMA, confirmed the incident on social media, highlighting the agency's efforts in coordinating the response.

The Goronyo market is a significant food produce market in the region. The boat was carrying 50 passengers when it capsized. The accident follows a similar disaster in Niger State three weeks ago, where at least 13 people died, and dozens went missing after a boat capsized with around 100 passengers onboard.

The Nigerian authorities are actively working to recover the missing people, but the heavy loss of life in these incidents has raised concerns about the safety of water transport in the region.
