Denmark’s Security and Intelligence Service, PET, has warned that Russia is actively preparing sabotage operations against targets in the country, with defence companies supporting Ukraine seen as a particular focus.
According to Danish newspaper Berlingske, PET believes Russian-linked actors are already carrying out detailed planning and reconnaissance that could be used in future attacks.
PET’s counterintelligence chief, Emil Græsholm, said individuals linked to Russia are attempting to recruit ordinary Danes online, often without disclosing who they are working for.
Those recruited may initially be offered payment, frequently in cryptocurrency, for tasks that appear harmless. These can include taking photographs of factories, warehouses, entrances, security arrangements or deliveries.
PET believes that, when combined, such assignments could provide valuable intelligence for future sabotage operations.
“We’re already seeing the planning now. Very concrete,” Græsholm said.
The intelligence service said Russia is increasingly focusing on defence companies in Denmark and elsewhere in Europe.
PET believes the apparent aim is to disrupt military supplies to Ukraine and put pressure on countries that continue to support Kyiv.
The agency warned that reconnaissance activities could eventually lead to more serious acts of sabotage, including arson.
PET expects the threat from Russian-linked sabotage operations to increase in both “scope and complexity”.
The agency has urged Danish defence companies to strengthen their vigilance and called on members of the public to remain alert to suspicious approaches or unusual requests, particularly those involving sensitive sites or infrastructure.
