Spain is battling some of the largest wildfires in its history, with uncontrolled blazes raging in more than 50 locations from the north to the south of the country, forcing over 4,000 people to spend the night outdoors.

According to reports by Spain’s official news agency EFE, citing local authorities, 25 fires are burning in Castile and León, 14 in Galicia, 12 in Asturias, and several more in the southern Extremadura region.

The worst-hit areas include Ourense in Galicia, León and Zamora in Castile and León, Somiedo Natural Park in Asturias, and Plasencia in Extremadura.

Local authorities said 3,250 residents in Castile and León remain unable to return home and will spend the night outside.

In Galicia, where wildfires have been raging for days, more than 47,000 hectares have already been destroyed. Hundreds of people near Ourense are staying in sports halls, shelters, or with relatives and friends due to the fires.

In Extremadura, 200 people were evacuated from Jarilla, a district of Cáceres, officials said.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will visit the hardest-hit areas on Sunday, including Ourense in Galicia and León in Castile and León.

The firefighting efforts are being supported by Spain’s Military Emergency Unit (UME) and aircraft sent by the European Union.
