Australia says it will recognise a Palestinian state during the United Nations General Assembly in September, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday.

The decision, endorsed by the cabinet, is intended to accelerate progress toward a two-state solution.

Prime Minister Albanese said recognition comes with assurances from the Palestinian Authority that Hamas will have no role in any future state.

“A two-state solution is humanity's best hope to end the cycle of violence in the Middle East and to bring an end to the conflict, suffering, and starvation in Gaza,” he told reporters.
