Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a telephone conversation.
According to a statement from the Kazakh Presidency, the call took place at the initiative of the Ukrainian side. During the conversation, Tokayev conveyed to Zelenskyy the sincere respect of the Kazakh people for the Ukrainian people, their history, culture, and language.
Reaffirming his country’s support for achieving a lasting peace in Ukraine based on the principles of international law, Tokayev said Kazakhstan had, from the very beginning, advocated a joint search for a peace formula on a fair basis and had consistently spoken in favour of compliance with the UN Charter, the inviolability of sovereign states’ borders, and their territorial integrity.
Tokayev stressed the importance of ensuring the preservation and defence of the Ukrainian state under the current extremely difficult circumstances, and of approaching the resolution of the conflict in a balanced and rational manner.
In this regard, he expressed his belief that all parties should act in line with the ancient wisdom that “a bad peace is better than a good quarrel.” He noted that in international relations, the issue of territory is the most difficult problem, often becoming an insurmountable obstacle to reaching agreements on peace and even on a ceasefire.
“However, the main priority now is the preservation of the Ukrainian state, based on unwavering international guarantees for Ukraine’s security,” Tokayev said.
In addition, Tokayev stated that Kazakhstan intends to continue active cooperation with Ukraine in various fields where mutual interests are ensured.
