Just days after a deadly Manhattan shooting, the Trump administration is cutting New York City's anti-terrorism funding by $64 million, sparking backlash from state officials and raising security concerns.

The announcement came shortly after a gunman killed four people inside a Manhattan skyscraper, home to the NFL and major financial firms. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) stated that the cut is based on an analysis of terrorism risk, including factors like population density and international border proximity.

However, this marks a 41% decrease compared to the previous year, continuing a trend of annual reductions since 2022.

The move drew criticism from Governor Kathy Hochul, who cited the city’s recent violent attacks and questioned the lack of transparency in fund distribution.

While Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claims the city hasn't fully spent previous grants, New York officials insist they’ve used nearly all allocated funds.

The New York City Police Department (The NYPD) has previously used the funding for surveillance systems like the Domain Awareness System.
