President-elect Donald Trump announced on December 16 that he plans to engage in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to find a resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Troubled by the images of devastation, Trump emphasized, "It's got to stop," during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida.
While Trump did not specify whether he believes Ukraine should cede territory to Russia in a potential settlement, he acknowledged the extensive destruction, stating that much of the contested land has been reduced to rubble, which would take a century to rebuild. "There are cities where not a building is standing, it's a demolition site," he noted.
Trump also shared that he had seen distressing images of battlefields filled with bodies, which he said reminded him of the grim photos from the American Civil War.
