A school bus carrying children from Minehead Middle School overturned Thursday afternoon near Wheddon Cross, sliding down a steep embankment.

Emergency services deployed three helicopters and 20 ambulances, transporting 21 injured passengers to hospital. Several others received treatment at the scene.

An off-duty firefighter who was driving behind the bus helped rescue passengers immediately. Firefighters and ambulance crews worked under challenging conditions to free trapped children.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed sorrow over the death, offering condolences to the family and praising emergency responders.

The bus was returning from a day trip with about 60 to 70 children, aged 9 to 14, just days before the school’s summer break.
