U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday accused Democratic Senator Adam Schiff of committing mortgage fraud, claiming the lawmaker should be "brought to justice"- a statement Schiff condemned as political persecution and denies any wrongdoing.
Trump, speaking on his Truth Social platform, alleged that Schiff, a long-time political adversary and key figure in Trump's 2020 impeachment, allegedly misrepresented his primary residence to obtain a lower mortgage rate. He cited findings from Fannie Mae, a federal housing finance agency, which he said indicated a "sustained pattern of possible mortgage fraud."
"Mortgage Fraud is very serious, and CROOKED Adam Schiff (now a Senator) needs to be brought to justice," Trump wrote.
According to the New York Post, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), which oversees Fannie Mae, has made a criminal referral to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for potential prosecution. However, officials at the DOJ, Fannie Mae, and FHFA declined to comment.
Schiff, who owns homes in both California and in Washington, D.C. area, rejected the allegations. A spokesperson said mortgage providers for both residences were fully aware that he used each of them throughout the year.
In response, Schiff posted on social media - “This is just Donald Trump’s latest attempt at political retaliation against his perceived enemies.”
Schiff has been one of Trump’s primary targets since 2019, when he led the first impeachment inquiry against the former president. That effort resulted in Trump's impeachment by the Democratic-controlled House over allegations he withheld military aid to Ukraine to pressure an investigation into Joe Biden. The Senate, then under Republican control, acquitted him.
