A light aircraft has crashed and caught fire at London Southend Airport, prompting a large emergency response and the cancellation of all flights.

Essex Police said it was called shortly before 16:00 BST on Sunday to reports of a 12-metre aircraft on fire at the airport in Southend-on-Sea. The airport confirmed a “serious incident” and said it was working closely with local authorities.

All outbound flights scheduled for Sunday afternoon, including services to Alicante, Faro and Palma de Mallorca, were cancelled. The airport said further updates would be issued “as soon as possible”.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, with Essex County Fire and Rescue confirming crews from Southend, Rayleigh Weir, Basildon, Billericay and Chelmsford were involved in the response. A police spokesperson warned that operations would continue for several hours and urged the public to avoid the area.

There has been no official word yet on casualties or the cause of the crash.
