Nigeria’s former president Muhammadu Buhari has died in London at the age of 82, a presidential spokesperson confirmed on Sunday.
Buhari, who led Africa’s most populous country from 2015 to 2023, passed away at around 4:30 p.m. (1530 GMT) after a prolonged illness, according to President Bola Tinubu’s spokesperson in a post on X.
Before his civilian presidency, Buhari served as Nigeria’s military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.
Buhari was known for his tough stance on corruption and security challenges during his time in office. His death marks the end of a long and controversial chapter in Nigerian politics.
