At least 4 dead as migrant boat capsizes off Dominican Republic coast

A boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized off the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic, killing at least four people, authorities confirmed on Saturday.

Seventeen others were rescued, including a young girl, and are reportedly in good condition after receiving medical care. Civil Defense chief Juan Salas said the vessel may have been carrying around 40 people when it sank near the shore in waters up to 600 metres deep.

The boat included migrants from both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Search efforts by emergency crews and the military are ongoing, though rough waves and difficult seabed conditions have complicated the operation.
