Hungary and Slovakia are exploring ways to make payments for Russian gas after new U.S. sanctions on Gazprombank created uncertainty.
Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto plans talks with Russian Deputy PM Alexander Novak to find a legal solution for future payments. The U.S. sanctions, imposed on November 21, complicate payments via Gazprombank, which had previously facilitated currency conversions into roubles.
Slovakia's state-owned SPP is facing difficulties with an upcoming payment, and failure to pay could lead to suspension of gas supplies. Russia has since cancelled the option for buyers to convert currencies into roubles at Gazprombank.
Other European buyers, particularly in the Balkans, are also impacted.
