China says U.S. has "no grounds" to criticize Tibet-related matters

China has rejected U.S. remarks on Tibet, warning Washington not to interfere after Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday.

China’s foreign ministry said that the U.S. has “no position” to comment on Tibet, urging Washington to respect the sensitivity of the issue. The statement came after Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the Dalai Lama’s legacy during his 90th birthday celebrations.

Spokesperson Mao Ning said he has “no right” to represent the Tibetan people or decide their future.

Rubio described the Dalai Lama as a symbol of “unity, peace, and compassion” and voiced support for preserving Tibetans’ cultural and religious identity, including their right to choose religious leaders freely.

Last week, the Dalai Lama said he would be reincarnated and that his foundation would identify his successor, countering China’s claim to that authority.
