Posting on X on Saturday evening, Musk wrote: “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
On Friday, Musk had asked his followers whether the U.S. needed a new political party.
Musk said the new party would focus on a small number of attainable seats in Congress, suggesting it could initially prioritise “just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts”. He noted that close vote margins in both chambers could allow the party to play a decisive role in key legislation.
The announcement followed a poll Musk launched on 4 July, in which more than 65% of over one million respondents voted in favour of forming a new party.
Musk previously supported President Donald Trump’s 2024 re-election campaign and was appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a newly established office focused on streamlining federal operations. He stepped down from the position in May.
The America Party was formally announced one day after President Trump signed a tax and spending bill into law. Musk had expressed concerns about the bill prior to its passage but did not elaborate further after the announcement.
In recent weeks, both Trump and Musk have made public remarks about their respective political positions, while maintaining differing views on some policy issues.
Musk has not yet announced specific candidates or districts the America Party will support. Under U.S. law, new political parties are not required to register with the Federal Election Commission until they raise or spend funds in connection with federal elections.
