A Russian attack on the city of Poltava in central Ukraine has resulted in two fatalities and damage to a military recruitment centre, according to the Ukrainian military and regional officials.

Regional governor Volodymyr Kohut confirmed that 11 people were also injured, and the military reported fires in both the recruitment centre and a nearby residential building. Emergency service photos from the scene showed firefighters battling the flames, alongside damaged buildings and vehicles.

Russia has escalated its drone and missile strikes on Ukraine over the past month, with some of the most significant attacks since its full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

This aerial assault follows a drone strike on Monday near a military recruitment centre in Kryvyi Rih, a central city. Civilians were injured in the attack, while military personnel and civilian employees at the recruitment centre sought shelter during the air raid.

Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have emphasized the urgent need for air defence support from international allies to counter such assaults.
