A widespread wildfire erupted on the popular tourist destination of Crete on Wednesday, threatening homes and forcing the evacuation of residents and tourists from at least four settlements.

According to the Greek fire service, 155 firefighters, supported by 38 fire engines and water tankers, have been battling the blaze in the municipality of Lerapetra. The fire broke out in the afternoon and was rapidly spread by strong winds, complicating firefighting efforts.

Reinforcements are being dispatched from Athens by both boat and aircraft. An official from the fire service, speaking on condition of anonymity, attributed the difficulty of the operation to the fierce winds and challenging terrain.

Local media report that some homes have been damaged, though no injuries have been confirmed. Authorities have already ordered the evacuation of people from Achlia and three other nearby villages. Around 3,000 evacuees have been relocated to temporary shelters.

On Wednesday evening, Greek firefighters were also battling separate uncontrolled wildfires on the island of Kythira and in the northern region of Chalkidiki.

Situated in southern Europe, Greece frequently experiences wildfires during its hot and dry summers. In recent years, climate change has been blamed for increasing the severity and destructiveness of these fires.
