The match began with an early breakthrough for Qarabağ, as Leandro Andrade found the back of the net in the 1st minute, giving the Azerbaijani champions a 1–0 lead. However, Athletic Club responded before halftime, with Gorka Guruzeta scoring in the 40th minute to level the score at 1–1.
The second half saw Athletic Club take control of the match. Mikel Jauregizar put the Spanish side ahead in the 56th minute, making it 2–1. Álex Berenguer sealed the win with a third goal in the 84th minute, ensuring a 3–1 victory for Athletic Club.
The match, officiated by Croatian FIFA referee Igor Pajac, kicked off at 20:45 Baku time and concluded with Athletic Club's first win of the group stage.
