Trump doubts trade deal with Japan

U.S. President Donald Trump has said he is not confident about reaching a trade agreement with Japan, warning that talks are unlikely to succeed before the 9 July deadline.

“We’ve dealt with Japan. I’m not sure we’re going to make a deal. I doubt it with Japan,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on his return from Florida. “They’re very tough.”

He also criticised Japan for refusing to import key U.S. goods, including rice. “They won’t take rice. They won’t take other products that we have,” he said.

Trump made it clear he does not plan to delay the deadline for other trade talks either: “No, I’m not thinking about the pause. I’ll be writing letters to a lot of countries.”
