Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu has arrived in Pyongyang for a high-level meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Russian news agency TASS reported.
Shoigu's visit follows direct instructions from President Vladimir Putin and is expected to include talks with Kim Jong Un.
The trip comes amid speculation that Kim may soon travel to Russia for a summit with Putin, potentially to commemorate the first anniversary of the mutual defense treaty signed by both countries last June, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Since the agreement was signed, North Korea has reportedly deployed thousands of troops to assist Russia in its war against Ukraine, raising further concerns among Western governments about deepening military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.
The Kremlin and North Korea have not officially confirmed the summit, but diplomatic activity between the two nations has intensified in recent weeks.
