Azerbaijan’s growing pharmaceutical sector was in the spotlight at the international conference “The Pharmaceutical Industry of Azerbaijan: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow,” held in Baku and organized by the Health Ministry and the Embassy of Hungary.
The event brought together government officials, industry leaders, and academics to discuss the strategic role of pharmaceuticals in Azerbaijan’s health system and economy. Speakers emphasized the importance of local production and expanding partnerships, particularly with Hungary.
Hungarian Ambassador Tamás Torma underscored the strength of Azerbaijan-Hungary relations, noting that pharmaceuticals play a key role in bilateral trade. “We are characterized by a very strong bond between our leaders, and this strong partnership and mutual sympathy can be felt in every part of society,” he said. “The pharmaceutical industry very well reflects the power and strength of the Azerbaijani people.”
Participants highlighted the significance of the Pirallahi Industrial Park and the Azerbaijan Medical University’s Pharmacy Faculty in shaping the future of the sector. Since 2016, Pirallahi has served as the country’s first specialized pharmaceutical zone, hosting seven companies with plans for expansion.
Azerbaijan has invested over 6.9 billion manats in industrial zones, creating more than 10,000 jobs. Key projects include a joint plant with Turkish company Gen İlaç, Scandens in Hökməli, and BioPharmax in the Alyat Free Economic Zone.
In 2024, pharmaceutical production increased by 81.5% to reach 20 million manats, while medicine output grew by 4%. To further boost local manufacturing, Azerbaijan has introduced tax and customs exemptions for pharmaceutical projects worth 50 million manats or more.
