An attempted drone-assisted drug smuggling operation was intercepted on the Azerbaijan-Iran border, resulting in the detention of two individuals.
On April 8, at a section of the Azerbaijan-Iran border near the service area of the "Lankaran" border detachment, a border patrol observed the movement of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) near the border line. The UAV dropped a small package into the area and then returned in the direction of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
As a result of a border search and operational measures, two individuals were detained on suspicion: Anar Rasim oglu Hasanov, born in 1988 and a resident of Lankaran, who came to retrieve the dropped package, and Razim Mahyaddin oglu Huseynov, born in 1985 and a resident of Gubadli, who was waiting for him in a car.
During initial questioning, the detainees admitted that they had come to collect 4 kilograms and 504 grams of marijuana dropped by the UAV.
The investigation also revealed that both individuals had previous criminal convictions.
Operational and investigative measures into the incident are ongoing.
