The European Union is exploring ways to support the development of transport routes connecting Armenia and Azerbaijan as part of broader efforts to promote lasting peace and regional integration in the South Caucasus, according to EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Magdalena Grono.

Speaking during a briefing in Yerevan, Grono said the progress made by Armenia and Azerbaijan towards a sustainable peace agreement had been encouraging and that the European Union remained committed to supporting both countries.

“The progress toward building sustainable peace in the region is incredibly impressive,” Grono said.

“As the European Union, we are committed to being strong partners for Armenia as well as Azerbaijan to help ensure that this peace becomes a lasting reality that benefits all people.”

The comments come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to normalise relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan after decades of conflict.

Connectivity a key EU priority

Grono said Brussels is supporting the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process through a range of mechanisms and views regional connectivity as a central element of long-term stability and economic development.

She noted that EU officials are holding discussions with both Armenian and Azerbaijani authorities on how the bloc can contribute to the development of transport infrastructure across the region.

“We are discussing with the Armenian authorities, and of course with our Azerbaijani partners, how best to support the development of transport routes so that all countries are involved, all communities along these routes benefit,” Grono said.

The proposed transport links are expected to improve trade and connectivity between countries in the South Caucasus while creating new economic opportunities for communities along key transit corridors.

Focus on the Middle Corridor

According to Grono, the discussions are also linked to the European Union's broader support for the Middle Corridor, a strategic transport route connecting Asia and Europe through the South Caucasus.

The corridor has gained increasing importance in recent years as governments and businesses seek alternative trade routes linking Europe with Central Asia and beyond.

Grono said improved regional transport networks could make a significant contribution to the development of the Middle Corridor while strengthening economic ties across the region.

The EU has repeatedly expressed support for initiatives that enhance regional cooperation, improve infrastructure and encourage economic integration as part of efforts to secure lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
