Azerbaijan says Russia must act to ease tensions

Azerbaijan-Russia tensions are caused entirely by Moscow’s actions, and it is Russia that must take steps to restore normal relations, said Farid Shafiev at the 13th CICA Think Tank Forum in Baku.

“Last December, Russia shot down an Azerbaijani passenger plane. Then, in Yekaterinburg, unpleasant incidents occurred involving members of the Azerbaijani diaspora, and in Ukraine, SOCAR’s storage facilities were attacked,” Farid Shafiev, Chairman of the Board of the Center of Analysis of International Relations said.

He noted that a recent meeting of the Azerbaijan–Russia intergovernmental commission took place in Astrakhan, chaired by the deputy prime ministers of both countries.

Shafiev emphasised that while Russia claims to seek peaceful relations, it is Moscow that must take the necessary steps to restore dialogue and implement adequate measures.
