Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev highlighted the historic peace agreement with Armenia, regional development, energy, and the country's growing role in diplomacy during an interview with Al Arabiya TV channel which broadcasts globally and is based in Riyadh.
During the broadcast, the President emphasised the country’s vision for stability, reconstruction, and international cooperation, according to Azerbaijan's news agency Azertac.
President Aliyev warmly welcomed the discussion on the historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia that was facilitated by U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington DC on 8 August.
He said that it marks the definitive end of the decades-long conflict, noting that Armenia had occupied nearly 20% of Azerbaijani territory and displaced more than a million citizens.
“Peace is not just a hope—it is a reality we are building together,” he said, saying that the agreement reflects a legal, binding commitment between sovereign states.
Regarding post-war reconstruction, Aliyev confirmed that more than 50,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) have returned to their ancestral lands. He stressed the importance of restoring infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods to create a stable and prosperous environment, with major reconstruction projects expected to be completed within two to three years.
The President described the Zangezur Corridor, called the 'Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity,' (TRIPP) as a strategic project connecting Azerbaijan’s mainland with Nakhchivan. He underlined its potential for regional trade, transit, and economic growth, benefiting both Azerbaijan and Armenia.
On bilateral relations with Iran, President Aliyev called them constructive, noting that projects such as the Araz Corridor ensure uninterrupted transport while maintaining strong neighbourly ties.
Discussing the recent civilian plane incident involving Russia, he reiterated Azerbaijan’s commitment to resolving issues through legal and diplomatic channels while condemning any acts of aggression or disrespect.
Highlighting Azerbaijan’s model of religious tolerance, President Aliyev pointed out that Shia and Sunni Muslims pray together in the same mosques, demonstrating the possibility of coexistence, stability, and intercultural dialogue.
Finally, the President praised President Trump for his decisive role in facilitating the peace agreement, noting that both Azerbaijan and Armenia have nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
