Iran welcomes PKK's declaration of disarmament and dissolution

Iranian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson welcomed the PKK's declaration of disarmament and dissolution, calling it an important step toward rejecting violence and strengthening security.

Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei expressed hope that the completion of the process would contribute to greater stability and peace in Turkey and the broader region.

This week, the Kurdish militant group known as the PKK announced it would cease operations under the name "PKK," marking what many are calling the end of a decades-long armed insurgency against the Turkish state in pursuit of Kurdish rights and independence.

Founded in the late 1970s by Abdullah Öcalan, the PKK launched an armed campaign in 1984, initiating a bloody conflict that has claimed more than 40,000 lives.

Following a landmark leadership congress, the group issued a statement declaring that it "has decided to dissolve ... and end its armed struggle," asserting that it had brought "the Kurdish issue to a point where it can be resolved through democratic politics."
