Afghanistan has officially received its 10,000th commercial container from China via the rail corridor passing through Central Asia, marking a significant achievement in the country's regional trade integration.

This milestone was celebrated at Afghanistan’s Hairatan Port, with officials from China and Afghanistan hailing it as a major step forward in enhancing regional connectivity.

The shipment, part of a quadrilateral economic corridor linking China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan, was commemorated during a press conference and ceremony attended by key figures, including the Deputy Minister of Railways from Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Works, the Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan, and representatives from various foreign nations.

The rail corridor, established in 2022, connects China to Afghanistan via the Hairatan-Mazar-i-Sharif line in northern Afghanistan. Since its inception, the corridor has facilitated the transportation of approximately 10,000 containers between the two countries, promoting not just trade but also regional integration.

Afghan officials emphasized that the rail corridor is transforming Afghanistan into a key transit hub, facilitating faster, safer, and more cost-effective transport for traders. The Ministry of Public Works has highlighted that this infrastructure development significantly boosts the country’s trade and economic capabilities.

With additional corridors in the pipeline, including those connecting South Asia to Central Asia, Afghanistan is set to benefit from increased transit revenues, which are projected to reach up to $600 million annually once fully operational. As the country’s role in global trade grows, it stands to shift from landlocked isolation to a strategic crossroads for international commerce.
