Six Indonesians have died and 14 others were injured in a bus crash while on a Muslim pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia during Ramadan, according to Indonesia's foreign ministry on Friday.
The incident occurred on Thursday, approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) outside of Jeddah, when the bus collided and flipped over, catching fire. The injured passengers are receiving treatment in a hospital, and the ministry has informed the families of the victims. The group had been undertaking the Umrah pilgrimage.
Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority country, sends around 1 million citizens annually to Saudi Arabia for Umrah, which is a voluntary pilgrimage to Islam’s two holiest cities, Mecca and Medina. Unlike the Hajj, Umrah can be performed at any time of the year.
