Iranian, Sudanese foreign ministers discuss bilateral relations, regional developments

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Monday evening discussed bilateral ties and regional developments with his Sudanese counterpart Ali Yousif Sharif.

Following their meeting in Iran's capital Tehran, the ministers held a joint press conference, during which Araghchi said that he had fruitful talks with his Sudanese counterpart.

Araghchi added that they discussed the situation in Sudan, stressing that Tehran supports the Sudanese army and government in their war against "the so-called Rapid Support Forces (RSF)."

For his part, the Sudanese minister briefed his Iranian counterpart on the situation in his country and the "crimes committed by (the RSF) militias supported from abroad."

He expressed his desire for Iran to play a role in the reconstruction of Sudan, "given its expertise and capabilities in this regard."

The Sudanese army and RSF have been fighting a war since mid-April 2023 that has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced 14 million, according to the UN and local authorities. Research from US universities, however, estimates the death toll at around 130,000.

Calls by the international community and the UN for an end to the war are mounting, with warnings of an impending humanitarian catastrophe as millions face famine and death due to food shortages. The conflict has spread to 13 of Sudan’s 18 states.
