A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Asaluyeh in southern Iran on Sunday morning, according to state media.

The quake occurred at a depth of 18 kilometres and was recorded about 24 kilometres from Asaluyeh, 32 kilometres from Kushknar in Hormozgan province and 45 kilometres from Galehdar in Fars province, state-run IRNA reported.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage.

Iran sits in a highly seismically active region and is frequently hit by earthquakes.

One of the deadliest in recent history occurred in 2013, when a 6.7-magnitude quake struck the city of Bam, killing at least 34,000 people. In July 2022, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Hormozgan province along the Persian Gulf coast, killing at least five people and injuring more than 80.
