Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described Kazakhstan as an “strategic partner” in Central Asia during a meeting with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Astana, according to a statement from the Kazakh presidency issued today.
“We view Kazakhstan as a strategic partner for Italy, and this region as a critically important crossroads. Dialogue is essential—and Kazakhstan clearly understands this. Our partnership spans many sectors, and our cooperation has always been highly productive. But, there is always room for more, from energy to culture, exchanges between our universities and our peoples," the Prime Minister Meloni stated.
The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen economic, trade and political relations, as well as exchanged views on regional and international issues, according to the official statement.
“It is a great honor for us to welcome you to Kazakhstan. Italy is one of our leading trading partners in Europe,” President Tokayev said, expressing confidence that the talks would give fresh impetus to bilateral ties. He also highlighted the participation of Italian companies in a recent business forum held in Astana.
The President added that Italy has invested approximately $7.6 billion into Kazakhstan’s economy for the last two decades. He highlighted that around 270 Italian companies are currently operating in the country, including major investors such as ENI, SDF Group, PetroValves, Maire Tecnimont, and Ballestra. Trade turnover between the countries increased by 24%, reaching $20 billion last year.
On her first official visit to Kazakhstan, Prime Minister Meloni praised the organization of the inaugural Italy–Central Asia Summit and stressed the importance of fostering regional partnerships.
