Uzbekistan and South Korea are deepening their collaboration on railway development as both countries advance plans for a high-speed passenger rail line connecting Tashkent and Samarkand.
Uzbekistan's Deputy Transport Minister Jasurbek Choriev met with Korea National Railway CEO Lee Song Hae to discuss innovative rail technologies and the development of the country's railway infrastructure, including advanced signaling, geolocation, and management systems.
A key focus of the talks was South Korea's ongoing feasibility study for the Tashkent–Samarkand high-speed rail project—one of Uzbekistan's top infrastructure priorities, in line with a presidential decree issued in October 2023.
The feasibility study will be conducted by a consortium of companies, including Saman Engineering, Dong Myeong Engineering, Korea Railroad Corporation, and Korea National Railway, tapping into grant funding from Korea Eximbank.
With Uzbekistan Railways overseeing 4,669 kilometers of rail lines, this project marks a significant step toward modernization—dramatically upgrading transportation between the nation's capital and one of its key historical cities.
