Cambodia welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping for a state visit, as the two countries explored opportunities for expanded cooperation against the backdrop of shifting global trade conditions.
Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Cambodia on Thursday as part of a regional tour that included Vietnam and Malaysia. During his meetings in Phnom Penh, Xi encouraged Cambodia to strengthen economic cooperation with China and voiced opposition to protectionist trade practices.
Cambodia is seeking additional Chinese investment for several development projects, including the proposed Funan Techo Canal. While no new funding agreements were publicly announced, officials confirmed the signing of 37 documents covering areas such as trade, investment, and financial cooperation.
The visit comes as both China and Cambodia manage the effects of recent US tariff measures. Cambodia’s exports, particularly in the textile sector, have been affected by increased duties, while China continues to face multiple trade restrictions.
In addition to economic matters, discussions included security cooperation, with a focus on addressing cybercrime and unauthorised activities operated by criminal groups. Recent reports noted Cambodia’s deportation of Taiwanese nationals to China shortly before the visit, reflecting its policy alignment with Beijing.
Xi’s trip highlighted China’s ongoing engagement with Southeast Asian countries as part of its broader regional strategy.
