Turkmen authorities announced that the next summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) will take place in Turkmenbashi’s Avaza National Tourist Zone, according to a statement.
Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, said during a telephone conversation with Valentina Matviyenko, chair of the Russian Federation Council, that preparations are underway for the meeting of CIS leaders in 2026.
The decision follows the 2025 CIS summit held on 10 October in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, where heads of state from member countries attended and a total of 19 documents were signed on cooperation in security, border protection, military cooperation and energy security.
A new “Commonwealth of Independent States Plus” (CIS+) format was established to provide a platform for cooperation between CIS members and external states or organisations, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation was granted observer status within the CIS. The leaders also agreed to transfer the CIS chairmanship for 2026 to Turkmenistan.
At the Dushanbe meeting, leaders discussed strengthening political dialogue, expanding economic ties and deepening joint efforts against terrorism and extremism. The summit highlighted a continuing emphasis on regional security cooperation and economic integration among CIS countries.
The 2026 summit in Turkmenistan is expected to build on these initiatives, bringing CIS member states together to advance collective priorities in the coming year.
