Another busy Atlantic hurricane season is on the horizon for 2025, with forecasters predicting above-average storm activity fueled by warmer ocean waters.
Forecasters predict an above-average Atlantic hurricane season in 2025, with 13 to 19 named storms, six to 10 hurricanes, and three to five major hurricanes. Warmer-than-normal ocean waters are the main factor driving the busy outlook, though conditions are less extreme than last year’s record-breaking season.
Climate change is contributing to stronger, wetter storms that intensify faster and move more slowly, increasing their impact. Despite budget cuts, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is fully prepared to monitor and forecast the season.
Other forecast groups largely agree on a busy 2025 season, projecting around 16 named storms with eight hurricanes and four major hurricanes.
