A humanoid robot designed for military applications took a detour into nightlife, performing a 30-minute DJ set at a San Francisco club. Built by Foundation Robotics Labs, Phantom, primarily developed for defense, showcased its versatility at the AI trade expo’s Tech Giga Party.
A war robot behind the DJ booth might seem like a scene from a cyberpunk thriller, but at Temple nightclub in San Francisco, it was a reality. Phantom, a humanoid robot built by Foundation Robotics Labs, delivered a 30-minute DJ set, showcasing a different side of its advanced programming.
The company, which primarily develops robots for national defense, has contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense, auto manufacturers, and warehouses. However, co-founder Mike LeBlanc wanted to demonstrate Phantom’s adaptability, leading to its debut as a club DJ at the AI trade expo’s Tech Giga Party.
Phantom’s performance reportedly kept the music flowing smoothly, though its fist-pumping lacked human rhythm. Despite its origins in defense, the robot has so far been deployed in noncombat roles, including aircraft maintenance and refueling.
The nightclub performance raises questions about the broader use of humanoid robots. While Phantom’s set entertained clubgoers, its primary function remains tied to military advancements, reinforcing the blurred lines between emerging AI technology and its future role in society.
