European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said on Saturday that any eventual peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine must include strong security guarantees both for Kyiv and for Europe as a whole.
In a post on X, von der Leyen stressed that the European Union is working hand in hand with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the United States to secure what she described as a “just and lasting peace.” She underlined that such a settlement cannot be achieved without binding guarantees that safeguard Ukraine’s sovereignty and also protect Europe’s wider security interests.
“Strong security guarantees that protect Ukrainian and European vital security interests are essential,” von der Leyen wrote, adding that the EU remains committed to ensuring the outcome of any talks leads to stability and resilience rather than renewed conflict.
