The wife and children of Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo were among around 1,700 people who died when two earthquakes struck northern Venezuela last week.
Trejo who also played for Venezuela based Club Sport Maritimo was said to be at training in Caracas when the disaster hit, while his family was at home.
His club, later confirmed the tragedy, in an instagram post saying: “Club Sport Marítimo de La Guaira profoundly laments the irreparable loss of the wife and sons of our player Lucas Trejo.”
Trejo later returned to the devastated site and reportedly searched through rubble for three days.
The impact on the football community has been widespread. Former player Héctor Bello also lost his wife Andrea, who “died while protecting their infant daughter,” according to reports, with the child later rescued alive. Bello wrote in an Instagram post: “I’ll tell her the story of how you saved her.”
The Venezuelan Football Federation also confirmed the deaths of several young players, including 18-year-old Yimvert Berroterán, describing him as someone who “represented our country’s colors with pride, commitment and love.”
Other youth players, including teenagers from Caracas-based academies, were also among the dead.
The disaster also affected families of international athletes abroad. Dodgers player Miguel Rojas said: “Literally two blocks away… two buildings collapsed,” adding that he felt “lucky to have my family still alive.”
The earthquakes have left both the sporting world and local communities in mourning, with ongoing concerns about missing persons and infrastructure collapse.
