The 78th Cannes Film Festival has officially opened, offering a 12-day celebration of cinema featuring premieres, directorial debuts, and thought-provoking documentaries.
The 2025 Cannes Film Festival has commenced on the French Riviera, bringing together filmmakers, actors, and audiences from around the world.
This year’s festival takes place amid industry discussions surrounding potential U.S. tariffs on overseas films. Cannes director Thierry Fremaux noted the complexities of the proposal and emphasized the need for further analysis before drawing conclusions.
Geopolitical themes play a significant role, with opening screenings of three Ukraine-focused documentaries: Zelensky, Bernard-Henri Lévy’s Notre Guerre, and 2000 Meters to Andriivka, directed by Oscar-winner Mstyslav Chernov.
Juliette Binoche heads the jury to choose the Palme d’Or winner from 22 films, while Un Certain Regard highlights debuts by Harris Dickinson, Kristen Stewart, and Scarlett Johansson.
The festival also pays homage to cinematic history, showcasing a restored version of Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush in celebration of its centenary. Cannes will close on May 24, wrapping up what promises to be a memorable event for global cinema enthusiasts.
