Ten suspects, including elderly men dubbed the "grandpa gang," went on trial in Paris on charges of robbing Kim Kardashian at gunpoint during Paris Fashion Week in 2016.
Ten suspects, many now in their sixties and seventies, began their trial on Monday over the 2016 armed robbery of reality TV star Kim Kardashian during Paris Fashion Week. Dubbed the "grandpa gang" due to their ages, they are accused of stealing jewellery worth millions of dollars.
The suspects confirmed their identities in court, with most stating they were retired. Kardashian is expected to testify in Paris in May, her lawyer said. During the robbery, the assailants, disguised with ski masks and police markings, tied Kardashian up and stole a $4 million engagement ring along with other valuables.
Kardashian later described the traumatic experience, recounting her fear of being killed as she pleaded for her life, mentioning her children. DNA evidence from the crime scene led to the suspects' arrests in January 2017.
Five of the accused face charges of armed robbery and kidnapping, carrying potential life sentences, while others are charged with complicity or possession of weapons. Among them, Yunice Abbas, 71, has admitted involvement and authored a book about the heist.
Another defendant, Aomar Ait Khedache, alleged to be the ringleader, denies leading the operation. His lawyer highlighted the severe consequences he could face given his age.
Although some stolen items were recovered shortly after the robbery, most, including the iconic ring, remain missing. One suspect has died, and another is too ill to stand trial.
