Ariana Grande says she will step back from public-facing work after her Eternal Sunshine Tour ends next month, marking a temporary pause in one of pop culture's most visible and closely scrutinised careers.
According to a statement provided by her representatives, the Grammy-winning singer and Oscar-nominated actress will step back from public-facing work after her Eternal Sunshine Tour ends, citing years of intense scrutiny over her appearance, health and personal life.
The announcement comes alongside Grande's decision to withdraw from a planned London revival of Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George, in which she had been due to reunite with her Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey. Producers said they supported her decision and confirmed the production would continue with a recast lead.
Grande's representatives said she intends to finish the current tour "on a high note" before taking what they described as a well-earned break from the constant visibility that has brought "endless, ongoing public scrutiny."
While the announcement may surprise some fans, Grande has spent much of the past five years under almost constant public attention.
Since 2021, she has remained a fixture in entertainment headlines through music releases, television appearances, film projects, awards campaigns and international tours.
In 2021, she joined NBC's The Voice as a coach, introducing her to a wider television audience while continuing her music career. In the years that followed, attention increasingly shifted to her role as Glinda in Universal's two-part adaptation of Wicked, one of Hollywood's most anticipated musical projects. Major casting announcements, filming updates and promotional appearances regularly kept Grande in the headlines.
The first Wicked film was released in 2024 and became a major cultural event. Grande's performance earned widespread praise and led to an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, placing her at the centre of the 2025 awards season.
Over the past five years, Grande has rarely been out of the public eye for long.
Throughout that period, Grande's appearance and health became recurring topics of discussion online. She addressed those comments on several occasions, urging people to be more careful when discussing others' bodies and mental wellbeing.
Recent debate intensified following the release of her Petal music video, which sparked another wave of speculation on social media.
She is still expected to appear in the upcoming comedy Focker-in-Law alongside Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro later this year, although it remains unclear how involved she will be in promotional activities.
For now, the focus remains on completing the final dates of the Eternal Sunshine Tour, which concludes in London on 1 September. After that, one of the entertainment industry's most visible stars appears ready to step back from the spotlight she has occupied almost continuously for more than half a decade.
